CareerBoost is a training program that provides industry certifications to adult learners who have barriers to entering and completing college level training programs. CareerBoost uses a team teaching model where a content instructor is in the classroom 100% of the time and a basic skills instructor is in the classroom 50% of the time. Because most of the learners enrolling in CareerBoost classes have a basic skills deficiency in math or language arts, or are second language learners, it is essential that instructional staff are able to identify learning needs and employ strategies to address gaps in learners’ academic skills. Many of the CareerBoost instructors are hired from the target industries but have little or no experience teaching learners below college ready standards. Without support and training, content instructors have had high number of students in this demographic exit the courses prior to completion.
CareerBoost instructor training courses provide individualized professional development to content instructors that focuses on identifying learning needs and developing strategies that address those needs in order to provide a learning environment where all participants can succeed in gaining the knowledge and skills needed to complete industry certifications and apply those skills to entry-level jobs. While the training focuses on the content instructor, training is delivered in a variety of methods including small group instruction, collaborative lesson planning with the basic skills instructor, self-paced modules on learning strategies and activities, and coaching.
