Chunking Strategies is a reusable learning object (RLO) that is part of the CareerBoost Teacher Training Project. As part of ongoing professional development, CareerBoost teachers attend workshops, participate in collaborative lesson planning, are provided with feedback from instructional coaches, and participate in self-directed professional development by completing online modules.
Because the CareerBoost instructors come from industry, do not have formal teacher training, and may have limited teaching experience, the instructional strategies modules provide short, specific, and contextualized training. The Chunking Strategies Module provides a short overview of chunking theory along with two examples of how an instruction can use chunking to increase student engagement and learning. The module also provides scaffolded application of the strategies through knowledge checks, reflection questions, scenarios, and a collaborative planning activity that contextualizes chunking into their teaching context.
